While in developed markets counterfeit seeds are an economic nuisance, they represent a real threat to the livelihood of the most vulnerable. The use of potentially ineffectual and sub-standard products is contributing to the loss of 10.6 million tons of food per year, adversely impacting the performance, efficiency, and confidence of hundreds of thousands of small-holder farmers.

In India alone, around 25% of pesticides, seeds and fertilizers on the market are thought to be counterfeit.

By leveraging commonly available mobile technology and assigning individual products with unique, secure and traceable identities, small-scale farmers can authenticate the provenance of their seeds before planting. Furthermore, Kezzler’s cloud-based app opens up a direct channel of communication between farmers and consultants, who are on hand to provide tailored consultation and information relating to the farmer’s location and specific crop based on individualized information acquired during the authentication.
