EPCIS 2.0 gives every trading partner the same record of a product’s journey. This solution brief explains how the GS1 standard works and how to start adopting it, with use cases from fashion, grocery, and food production.

What is EPCIS 2.0?

EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) 2.0 is a GS1 standard for capturing and sharing supply chain event data. Each event records what happened to a product, when, where, why, and how. Released in 2022, version 2.0 also adds the How dimension for sensor data such as temperature, a new AssociationEvent type, certification data, and GS1 Digital Link support.

Why traceability breaks down between partners

Most brands already collect production and logistics data. However, visibility often stays limited. Systems run in disconnected silos, and partners still exchange much of their data manually. As a result, disruptions such as late dispatches, product loss, or spoilage often go unnoticed until a shipment arrives. That delays intervention, complicates recalls, and makes requirements like Digital Product Passports (DPPs) harder to meet.

Inside the brief

  • Where visibility breaks down: limited visibility, insufficient traceability, and poor integration between partners.
  • How EPCIS 2.0 works: the five event dimensions, the five event types, the Core Business Vocabulary (CBV), and how partners share event data.
  • What it delivers: fewer quality risks, less manual work, and a synchronized flow of data and goods.
  • EPCIS in practice at Kezzler: how Kezzler captures, interprets, and shares EPCIS events for traceability, consumer engagement, and compliance with the DPP and FSMA 204.
  • Use cases: anonymized Kezzler projects with a European fashion retailer, a grocery retailer, and a food manufacturer.
  • A path to adoption: GS1’s eight-step visibility modeling method and a worked visibility data matrix.
