Protecting the Weixian Radish

RunHui Agriculture used QR codes and product authentication to protect the Weixian radish, improve food supply chain traceability, and give consumers confidence in the product’s origin and authenticity.

The Weixian radish is no ordinary vegetable. A protected-origin delicacy grown in Shandong Province, China, it carries the reputation of an entire region. That reputation was at risk. Food fraud costs the global food industry an estimated $30 to $40 billion every year. Agricultural products with strong regional identity face disproportionate targeting. So RunHui Agriculture needed a way to bring traceability to their food supply chain, protect product integrity, and meet growing consumer demand for transparency.

Challenge

Preserving trust in a protected-origin product

The Weixian radish holds Green Food A-grade certification and Protected Designation of Origin status. That makes it valuable, but also vulnerable to counterfeiting and diversion. Consumers had no reliable way to verify that the product they were buying was genuine, grown in the right area, or handled correctly along the supply chain.

RunHui also needed to unify their supply chain data. Batch information, farm origin, picking dates, and inspection records lived in different systems, with no single view connecting field to shelf. Without a traceability layer linking those data points, isolating a quality issue would be slow and difficult.

Solution

Turning every pack into a source of trusted information

RunHui partnered with Kezzler to deploy a unit-level authentication and traceability solution across their production and packaging operations. Each radish pack received a unique, secure label. That label combined a scannable QR code with a hidden authentication PIN, and together they served two distinct purposes.

The QR code allows the product to be tracked end-to-end through the supply chain. It also gives consumers instant access to the product’s full journey: from the farm, through harvest and inspection, to the shelf. Meanwhile, the hidden PIN provides a second layer of verification, confirming within milliseconds that the product is genuine.

The solution integrates with China’s WeChat platform. As a result, consumers can scan directly within an app they already use. All traceability data feeds into one centralised system, linking upstream supply chain events to each individual pack.

The case study PDF covers the full integration architecture and data flow in more detail.

Results

Building trust through transparency

The Kezzler solution delivered measurable outcomes across supply chain integrity, consumer trust, and operational capability:

  • Fraud prevention at the point of sale: Consumers can verify authenticity in real time, eliminating uncertainty about the product’s origins and protecting RunHui’s premium positioning.
  • Farm-to-fork visibility: Complete traceability with batch, farm, and inspection data linked at the unit level, enabling faster and more targeted responses to any quality issues.
  • Consumer engagement through transparency: When someone scans the product, they see the full story of the Weixian radish: where it grew, when it was harvested, and how it was handled. This kind of connected experience builds the loyalty that drives long-term revenue.
  • A platform ready to scale: The solution launched covering Weixian radishes, with a clear roadmap to extend across Hanting watermelons and additional product lines within the Industrial Park.
  • Government-aligned and future-ready: China continues to strengthen food safety regulation and traceability requirements. Because of this, RunHui can meet evolving compliance demands without re-platforming.

“We were impressed with Kezzler’s technology and the speed and ease at which it could be integrated with our existing digital infrastructure. A quick and easy authentication process reassures consumers that they have purchased genuine Weixian radishes, protecting the reputation of the Weixian brand and the economic growth of the region.” Chen Hailin, Senior Project Manager, Shandong Runhui Agricultural Comprehensive Development Co. Ltd
