Counterfeit refrigerants create more than lost revenue. They expose technicians, distributors, and end users to products that may contain unsafe or unauthorized substances while damaging trust in established brands.
After authorities seized nearly 3,500 counterfeit cylinders of Honeywell Genetron® 134a refrigerant in Saudi Arabia, Honeywell acted. The company launched a global brand protection initiative combining secure labeling, product authentication, and digital identities. The program was first introduced in the Middle East before expanding to additional markets worldwide.
Challenge
Protecting customers and the brand from counterfeit refrigerants
Counterfeit refrigerants aren’t just a revenue problem, they’re a safety one. Genetron® 134a is Honeywell’s refrigerant used across automotive, commercial, and industrial air conditioning. It was being copied and sold across the Middle East, exposing consumers and technicians to unverified, potentially unsafe product.
The scale of the problem became clear in 2013, when local law enforcement in Saudi Arabia seized nearly 3,500 containers of counterfeit Genetron 134a. A follow-up Honeywell survey found that 90 percent of residents believed non-branded product was already in circulation. Furthermore, 98 percent said they’d choose a brand-name refrigerant from an authorized dealer if it meant lower counterfeit risk. Honeywell needed a way to prove, at the point of sale and in the field, that a cylinder was genuine.
Solution
A three-layer brand protection solution, built to scale globally
Honeywell introduced a multi-layered anti-counterfeiting technology framework developed in tandem with Brady and Kezzler. Instead of relying solely on physical security, the team fused hard-to-replicate labeling with cloud-based digital intelligence.
Specifically, the architecture relies on three key pillars:
- Physical security: Brady engineered a specialty, tamper-evident label affixed directly to the top of the product cylinder, preventing illegal removal and reuse.
- Covert verification: Honeywell embedded a proprietary, machine-readable covert taggant within an Over Print Varnish (OPV) on the label for advanced authentication.
- Digital identity & serialization: Kezzler provided the cloud-based backbone, assigning each individual cylinder a unique digital identity. This identity is accessible via a secure QR barcode and tracking serial number generated by Kezzler’s real-time serialization platform
By encoding this identity into a secure QR code and serial number, the platform bridged the gap between physical items and digital data. This allowed Honeywell to achieve granular product traceability and authentication. Distributors, field technicians, and end-consumers could scan the code or verify the serial number online to complete an immediate authenticity verification before deploying the refrigerant.
Results
A scalable brand protection program deployed globally
The partnership gave Honeywell a verifiable, unit-level identity for every cylinder it ships, and a program that scaled well beyond its original scope:
- A verified product identity at unit level: every cylinder is individually identified, tracked, and authenticated, from the production line to the end customer.
- Faster, more targeted recalls: unit-level traceability means Honeywell can isolate affected product precisely instead of pulling entire batches, cutting recall costs and disruption.
- Reduced counterfeit and diversion risk: covert taggants, tamper-evident labels, and serialized IDs make counterfeit product harder to produce and easier to catch, in the field and at the point of inspection.
- Consumer-facing proof of authenticity: customers can check a cylinder’s tracking code online, turning a safety concern into a visible trust signal for the brand.
- A program built to scale: the same architecture that launched in the Middle East now runs globally, without a redesign, showing how a brand protection solution can grow with the business rather than being re-platformed for each new market.
