Tracking and tracing high volume products is a very challenging undertaking. The vast number of products being uniquely protected and the sheer number of simultaneous code generations, code authentications, tracking and tracing requests and users served make it less than trivial.

Conventional mass-serialization technologies compare and reference a number on a product item with what is stored in a database system.
The performance drop suffered by these technologies when reaching a high number of codes, is due to the tremendously complex task of ensuring numbering non-collision and simultaneously maintaining the indexes in the databases that must be kept continuously updated. Conventional databases are not designed nor optimized for this type of application.
